You may be asking yourself, "What is the difference between Web Development and Application Development?". Well we’re going to tell you!

Traditionally, Application Development is defined as creating a standalone application to run in a controlled environment to accomplish a specific task. An example would be Microsoft Word.

Specific computer languages were designed to help in the production of such applications. Some of these languages are Visual Basic, C++, and Assembly. These languages were developed with the understanding that they would be used to create full featured standalone applications, hence their lack of constraint on system resources like memory or hard disk drive space.

Application development creates an application to run on a single and/or multiple user’s computers or across a network.

Advantages could include:
  • speed
  • tighter integration
  • higher security
  • greater control

Disadvantages could include:
  • every machine needing the software to run
  • if application is upgraded than each machine will need the same upgrade
  • outside users may need the application installed to become compatible
  • outside users may not be able to operate application or access certain critical aspects of the application

Web Development is defined as creating an application that is designed to run over public networks such as the Internet. Because these public lines are restricted in many ways the traditional applications would not run effectively. Increasing the effectiveness of these applications required new languages and programming techniques, creating a Web-Based Applications.
